Brighter, Safer College of the Redwoods Campus

kíaroLED® Ideal for College of the Redwoods Retrofit, Energy Savings 20%

San Francisco and LA get most of the attention in California, but the northern coast is another world with pristine forests, rugged coastline, and people who value the environment. That’s the setting for the College of the Redwoods, a progressive center of learning dedicated to “transforming lives” for 2,000 students and the communities of northern California.

Chartered 50 years ago, the College of the Redwoods campus in Eureka started small, but has grown quickly and now occupies several acres which includes many pathways and trails. “Lighting on this campus is very important; we value a pleasant environment but our primary concern is safety and security,” said Steven Roper, facilities director for the college. “When it became obvious we could make improvements with new lighting technology, we began looking seriously at replacing our old light sources with LEDs. With help from funds made available through California prop 39, we developed a plan to retrofit our existing 220 post tops with LEDs. We just needed to find the right way to do it.”

That’s where Consolidated Electrical Distributors and EYE Lighting introduced the college to kíaroLED®, one of the industry’s premier solutions for outdoor lighting retrofits.

The DLC Qualified kíaroLED Post Top is EYE Lighting’s proven LED solution for retrofitting street and area type luminaires. Combined with EYE’s expertise in engineering the mechanical package, the solution for customers like College of the Redwoods becomes attractive financially. “We lead the industry in our capability to provide custom LED retrofit solutions that result in improved lighting quality, and a payback timeframe that CFOs approve,” said Tom Salpietra, President of EYE Lighting.

“Every lighting retrofit job has challenges; our team worked through the issues and the result is great lighting on the campus. Everyone - faculty, staff, and students - is happy with how the new LED lights look.” - Mark Brown, of Redwood Electrical Services

CED of Ukiah, California has worked with the College for years. “We are pleased to help bring this new technology to the school,” said Rich Solis of CED. “The new lights are beautiful, classy, and brighter with better color. The light coverage is uniform, perfect for the campus environment. And it will improve the operation of the security cameras.”

Mark Brown, of Redwood Electrical Services, installed the EYE kíaroLED Post Tops. “Every lighting retrofit job has challenges; our team worked through the issues and the result is great lighting on the campus. Everyone - faculty, staff, and students - is happy with how the new LED lights look.”

Steven Roper summed it up. “We believe the college will see a 20% reduction in lighting energy use, and significant savings in maintenance. The new lights, which are twice as bright, are ‘fabulous’. I look forward to the day when we can retrofit our other two campuses.”
